THE NASSENSTEIN LEGEND
The following legend was told to me by three (3) different NASSENSTEIN's. Is it fact or fiction? I don't know, but it sounds like it could be true, how else can you explain our old GERMAN name NASSENSTEIN?
As the story goes, it all started when a young man by the name of JOHANNUS came down from the foot hills and approched some young people eating their lunch on the banks of the SULZBACK RIVER (which still flows by the HOF NASSENSTEIN) as they were friendly toward him, he stopped to talk and was offered some food. As he was eating, a high wind came up and blow one of the young ladies bonnet into the river, JOHANNUS jumped into retrieve it and was swept by the current toward a large rock that turns the river south, JOHANNUS retrieved the bonnet and while soaking wet climbed on to the rock and while waving the bonnet in the air, yelled back at everyone; "HERE I STAND JOHANNUS WET ON STONE", translated it means JOHANNUS NASS-EN-STEIN. As the legend goes, he married the young lady who's bonnet he saved.
In my research I did find a JOHANNUS mentioned in 1385 AD, I don't know if this is the same Johannus, but I like to think so.
